8 Tips For A Comfortable Maternity Photoshoot

1. Choose a Maternity Photographer Who Makes You Feel Comfortable

If you’re planning to book a maternity photoshoot in the coming months, this is the first (and most important) step! When it comes to capturing these intimate moments you want to make sure you work with someone you trust and feel comfortable around. I always encourage new clients to schedule a meet & greet video call with me so we can break those initial barriers.

Think of hiring a photographer like you would hire a therapist. Taking the time to get to know your photographer, even over a short video consultation call can make the world of a difference so you can start to feel 100% confident before your next session! AND if you’re not feeling their vibe, that’s totally OK! This gives you the chance to find someone who you feel is the right fit for you.

2. Share concerns with your photographer

For most of you, this is probably your first time capturing maternity photos – and it may not be your last – so voicing your concerns up front is encouraged! If you are feeling nervous or unsure, your photographer will most likely have the answers you need. They may even be able to help alleviate some of those nerves!

If you’re feeling achy or uncomfortable during the session — no problem — we’ll take a break and get you off your feet. If you’re worried about how you will look in your photos, keep reading below for more tips that may help you feel extra confident for your session!

3. Consider Timing

On average the best time to schedule your maternity session is when you are around 28-36 weeks. This is usually the time when your baby bump is well established, but you’re not at the point when you’re so uncomfortably pregnant that the idea of standing for a few photos is an absolute chore. Ultimately there is no right or wrong time, only what is right or wrong for you. If you’re wanting to do them earlier or later that’s totally fine! As long as you are comfortable!

4. Dress Comfortably

Again – comfort is key! If you think you’re going to spend half the session fixing or adjusting some part of your outfit, I would suggest wearing something else. Consider fabrics that flow around or hug your body comfortably. Think about what shows off your style while also making you feel like the goddess you are!

If you need some inspo, here are some great examples of tried and true comfortable outfits from my past clients:

  • A light and flowy maxi dress.

  • A supportive sports bra with unbuttoned jeans and some sort of additional layer – we love a bare baby bump!

  • A fitted dress or skirt to accentuate the bump

  • An oversized knit sweater with some leggings or a bodysuit

  • Whatever feels like YOU and you would wear on a normal day

5. Consider the Location

Once you decide what you want to wear, next you will need to decide where you feel the most comfortable wearing that.

For example, if you are wanting more artsy or intimate photos using a sheet and simple undergarments, you may feel more comfortable capturing those at home or in a studio. Alternatively, if you are wanting to wear a long flowy dress that gets picked up in the wind & you can freely dance around in, you may want to consider an outdoor location.

Your photographer will be able to offer great advice depending on how you want your photos to feel, BUT here are a few pros and cons to each type of location to consider.

AT HOME

Pros: The most comfortable space where you can change clothes freely & have photos with more sentimental value.

Cons: May require some upkeep or additional work ahead of time including cleaning, organizing or finishing possible renovations on rooms/spaces.

IN STUDIO

Pros: A unique and private space that is well designed and clean for more intimate, yet simple portraits.  MANY to choose from to suit your style and vibe (this is one of my favourites).

Cons: Booking fees and schedule. You will have to book ahead of time, so you may not get the date you want & this option is not free like the others.

OUTDOORS/PUBLIC SPACE

Pros: The natural lighting is beautiful and the possibilities of background are endless. We could go somewhere architectural, lush & green, urban or to the beach!

Cons: Weather is unpredictable and may cause a need to reschedule or come up with a plan B. Additionally, depending on the location, you may be surrounded by other people.

6. Involve your partner/family

Of course we will plan to capture many photos of you and your adorable bump as we document this incredible journey. However, including your partner, other children or family pets can make these images even more special!

You’re not only celebrating this new life that you’re bringing into the world. You’re celebrating the beginning or the continuation of your family. Remember this moment is just as special to them as it is to you!

Not to mention, having your people around to support you will also help make you feel extra comfortable.

7. Pamper yourself before the maternity photoshoot!

Make this day extra special by treating yourself before the session! Go get a pedicure, a haircut, buy yourself a cute outfit, take yourself out to lunch, etc. Do anything that makes you happy, because a happy mama is a confident one, and it will show in your photos — guaranteed!

8. When in doubt, focus on the bump

At the end of the day this moment is about you and the life you are bringing into the world, so I encourage you to not focus on the photos, and instead focus on this incredible milestone.
